Grant-Davie defines purpose in relationship to writing by connection. Connecting all of your points together plays an important role in your writing and that’s what makes it succesful. I do think my thinking has changed a little bit in the way of how I will connect my ideas in my own writing. I also feel like purpose brings all of the key terms together.
Greenes essay talks a lot about discourse community and I will refer back to his essay and take pieces away to help me as I write. I will also use the paragraph about framing a good question when I am starting to do my interviews. My way of doing the interviews will be tough because everyone I am interviewing lives on campus. If I do an in person interview I will record our conversation, and if I do this through messaging them it will be easier to keep their responses.
I thought the student essay focused a lot on the case studies and I plan to do the same. Majority of my paper is about my research and what I find so I feel that it will give me a lot of information to talk about and expand on. The student essay is helpful in the way of looking at a templet for me.
Knowledge to me is obtaining new information from a number of different sources. Not all knowledge would be facts but it would be knowledge. Learning on the other hand is more about school for me. Learning how to do something, a process, or terms. Hyland looks more at the numbers and averages and a lot of data. Information and knowledge are different to me because information makes me think of random facts. Knowledge makes me think of topics I know a lot about. I think this difference is important because it can change what you think is important and what isn’t.
Johnsons discussion opened my mind to how ideas are made and where they come from. I thought it was really interesting because I never thought about it that way. I thought that you just got an idea just because, not from other sources. I think that Johnsons discussion has made me think more about the things I read. I feel like I analyze things more than usual and this will help me more and more while I write my next paper.
I thought knowledge came from learning and thinking in new ways and reading other text before you write your own ideas and stories. It is shaped and formed from other writings and other ideas and making new ones of your own. I don’t think my thinking has changed, because it still comes from research. New writing can spark new ideas with other people which creates new knowledge.
One discourse community that I belong to is the catholic church. We have the same goal of practicing our religion and to ultimately get into heaven. Our priest talks and tells us the stories and prayers in a lecture setting. The transfer of knowledge that we get is the metaphors and his word. The genre that we have is the bible and the lecture that is given while we’re there. The content is all about the stories and what he thinks is right and wrong and what we should do. Although I belong to this one I don’t think I’ve been apart of one that I have resisited. I didn’t like going to church for a while, but I started taking it in and maybe this is a discourse community that I have resisted and then grown to like.
Bitzer defines rhetorical situation as a way to provoke action and to be social. It invites a response but not just any response, it needs a fitting response to the situation. Some of the key terms that go with rhetorical situation are audience, constraint, exigence, and action. I think that rhetorical situation is used to get people to think and provoke change. I think a speech would be an example that uses rhetorical situation. A speech addresses can address an issue and produce action in the mean time. This is also how genre and rhetorical situation connect. Genre can start the coversation and communication, rhetorical situation then inspires the change that needs to happen.
Before reading Bazerman I thought genre was just the topics of the books I was reading. That’s what your teacher tells you in elementary school when you go into the library. I was never thinking of speeches, assignments, or a syllabus.
Bazerman defines genre as communication, getting pe0ple to talk and how they respond. I never thought about genre as being a way of communication between people. I never realized how many genres there were other than mystery, informational, comedy, ect. After reading Bazerman I had to rethink my entire defintion of what genre was. The only similarty between my definiton and his was that it breaks up into categories.
I feel that commencment speeches have one main thing in common, they all have a similar purpose. They are given to inspire and to make you think. The speech that was given at my graduation was inspiring for the future and looking back at all of the good memories. This genre goes hand and hand with the illocutionary act where the reader or listener gets to interpret the words. Taking away what they think it should mean. In my opinion this is one of the most important areas of literature.
In the quote provided I think that she is trying to connect the idea of revising and going back to think of a different way to teach. Teaching the way the students learn instead of just telling them how it was usually done. Which is one of the reasons a lot of teachers have their students take test at the beginning of the semester to find out what kind of learner they are. This is explains the “new kind of classroom”. In the second quote I think that she’s trying to convey that getting into your own habit of learning and then also taking on and working on something new to help you in the future. Also telling us that learning something once and making a habit of it will further your learning even more.
This documentary and text work on language, culture, and identity by discussing experiences and they got through their own hardships and still came out as themselves. Gloria uses this text to tell minorites the experiences she’s had and to always stay true to your own identity and to your culture. This text is also used to tell the dominant cultures what she had to go through and to provoke change for the future. The intended audience is important to this text because of the way she explains how hard it was for the oppressors to reject her language and subdue it. This also shows the other spanish chicanos how she got through this and kept her own identity. I had never really thought about how people treated others who didn’t speak the same language. I always thought that others would try to connect in a positive way. Bringing in the documentary, the beginning of the job at Columbia House was easy and fun. The job began to be more difficult to deal with when his manager quit and he had to take on a larger work load. While taking on this new responsibility, he felt a divide between him and his coworkers when upper management took a liking to him and his work. To battle the divide he talked through the issues and felt as though the weight was lifted, especially when he had another person to take on half the work with him. By working through the problems and listening to his coworkers they had a better relationship and the tension dissappered. He stayed true to himself and videoed everything in the process which was very interesting to watch. I felt that the documentary brought the struggles into a situation that I could more easily understand. These two stories are not just for the people involved or the people making decsions, they are also for students learning how to navigate through new territory and to see the other side of what’s going on.
I thought in general the text was hard to read because you were having to search through the spanish to find english and it took me longer than usual. I think the target audience would be the people that have been through this and people in authority. I think the purpose this text gives information to other people about the experience she encountered. I could see myself writing something like this because although it was hard to read it was still interesting, it felt like I was reading a journal of hers.
I only read if I have to read for a class, I haven’t had a lot of books that I could really get into. If I do have to read for a class I try to read the material a couple days before it’s due and I try to activley read by reading it out loud, taking notes, and re-reading. In situations like these where I have to write something about what I read I try to analyze the text and think about what it’s really saying.
